Paul Stastny Signs 5-Year, 33M Deal With Avalanche
Well folks, we will now see Avalanche fans finally stop saying "WELL WHO IS GOING TO REPLACE SAKIC???", because at 6.6M, there’s no way he isn’t the answer to this question.

Now now, as a leafs fan, I’d honestly rather have Raycroft right now than Toskala or Cujo
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
Isn’t that like picking death by firing squad or the electric chair? I’d just rather not choose death.
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
If only to guarantee a good draft pick. Raycroft was better than we gave him credit for (but not much) but he had no passion at all… I could watch him justify a 5-1 loss in March like it was preseason. That wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t the fourth time I’d seen it.

Budaj is a good goalie, he just needed a coach that can stick to the same plan for more than 20 minutes. He’s doing great now, and he did great the last time he was our #1.
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
Budaj has been playing extremely well these past few games.
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
dugg for not being a mountain goat pic.
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
Did anyone else click expecting to see a man debating with a mountainous slide made of snow?=( I was disappointed.
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
umm…. no?
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
Really no one can replace Sakic to the avs.
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
Hmmmmm…. The NHL still exists?
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
Hmmmmm…. Go watch your nascar

He has a point - hockey has been in a sorry state since the lockout. However, it’s obvious to everyone that it was only a prelude to the newest and most exciting era of hockey. Players like Ovechkin, Crosby, and now Stastny, along with a mess of other young, up-and-coming, highly-competitive players, are ushering in a new era of hockey. I, for one, am more excited than ever. For better or worse, Gods (and hockey fans surely know true Gods) like Sakic, Forsberg, Modano, and Jagr (I could go on all day, if necessary - without even mentioning the goaltenders!) are going to be adequately replaced, and I can’t wait to see their replacements.
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
Its been in a sorry state? Every year they’re smashing revenue and attendance records. Last years winter classic was the highest TV rated game in 10 years, the Stanley Cup finals had some of the highest cup final ratings they’ve ever had, in fact, they were half of the world series. The NHL is starting to get its ***** back together again, trust me.
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
Hmmmmmmm…. Stay in Canada
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
nhlol
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
Huh. I didn’t know Barrett had that kind of money. Maybe he started a lucrative Materia mining business post-Crisis.
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
News only Eskimos could give a rat’s ass about.
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
wow. So much hate here.Go oilers..especially after they stunk it up bad last night.
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
cloud strife
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
This is a great signing by the Avs.Paul Stastny is one of the elite up an coming players in the NHL, though often times, it seems as though he flys under the radar. He’s exactly a point per game player in his first 164 games, and is showing no signs of slowing down. Don’t be surprised if he puts up 85-100 points each season for the duration of this 5 year deal. There is not a single club in the league that wouldn’t love to have this kid on their roster.Also….dugg for hockey.
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
digg = hockey fans
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
Sakic = irreplaceable.
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
I thought the same thing when Yzerman retired a few years ago. I thought that was it for us Wings fans. Lidstrom and Zetterberg both stepped up, though, and filled the void left by the Captain. Sakic and Yzerman (And Modano, I think) are/were all about equal in importance to their franchises. Hopefully the Avs (and in a few years, the Stars) can survive losing the greatest player in their history.
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
Hockey = real sport
6 December 2008, 8:16 pm
Too bad they couldn’t lock him up with a Dustin Brown-like deal. That would have been great for the avs.
6 December 2008, 8:17 pm
ehh, I think the Avalanche management is smart and not taking a risk of having him forever. You never know what could happen 8 years down the road.
6 December 2008, 8:17 pm
And you’re posting mainstream SPORTS NEWS TO DIGG why?Buried.
6 December 2008, 8:17 pm
Maybe its because digg has a spots/hockey section for this kind of stuff, which is where it is in.
6 December 2008, 8:17 pm
Because… it’s digg
6 December 2008, 8:17 pm
…and we digg it.
6 December 2008, 8:17 pm
As Stastny in the once Nordiques organization again!!!!!!
6 December 2008, 8:17 pm
He’s been there for several years, he’s just signing his extension.
6 December 2008, 8:17 pm
This is a great signing for the AVS once they resolve their goalie BS they should be back on track, Joe’s 1 Year contracts cant last forever, and now in his 20th year in the league i would expect him to retire after this season, as much as i would hate to see it.
6 December 2008, 8:17 pm
Who is going to replace Forsburg? I wish the 2001 team was forever.
6 December 2008, 8:17 pm
Forsberg!
6 December 2008, 8:17 pm
Ahhh my bad, still one of the greatest though.
6 December 2008, 8:17 pm
he is
6 December 2008, 8:17 pm
I misread the title and was expecting the guitarist from KISS to be playing hockey.Very disappointed.
6 December 2008, 8:17 pm
Stastny’s a great player…but what is with the description? The amount that he’s paid doesn’t indicate how good of a player he is. Jeff Finger currently makes more than Henrik Zetterberg. Paul Stastny might be the answer to Joe Sakic because he’s an excellent player, but not because he’s making $6.6M.
6 December 2008, 8:17 pm
And the current league leader in goals is currently making $1.2MStastny’s good, but I’m not convinced that he’s $6.6M good. Only time will tell, I suppose.
